Last night was the opening gala for the Beaverton Showcase. My Dark River of Stars book was there so I attended as an artist. I was very surprised to find that DRS had not only won 1st Place in its category (mixed media) but also taken BEST IN SHOW!!
The exhibit is at the Beaverton Library (12375 SW 5th Ave, Beaverton) and runs through next Sunday, November 11th. Stop by and see all the art! If you can't make it, I'll also have copies of the book available at the LCAC Branching Out show at the Multnomah Art Center gymnasium December 7th and 8th.

Medieval Faire this weekend
Hear Ye! Hear Ye!
Well, the fair season is about to kick off for me this weekend with the Society for Creative Anacronym’s Faire in the Grove. It’s a fun weekend in Forest Grove with the McMenamin Grand Lodge’s park-like grounds transformed into Medieval Europe.
To get ready, I’ve been busy in my studio making books.
They’re everywhere!
I got the leather cut and paper folded last week. With only a few days left to get ready, I’m heads down with my sewing.
Be sure to stop by and enjoy the activities!

I recently started taking classes with Craig Srebnick, (http://www.csfineart.com/) at the Oregon Society of Artists and I have to say I'm hooked. Below are two stages of the demo he worked on over the last two classes. After three classes with him it feels like my painting has taken a huge leap forward. Maybe it's just my confidence but I am sure enjoying the experience. I'll post my painting later. He is looking for warehouse space to start some larger classes. He also has some free demos if you are interested in checking him out. He is a very knowledgeable instructor.
On another topic I wanted to mention the Columbia Fiber Arts Guild, http://www.columbiafiberartsguild.org/exhibits.htm, for those wonderful fiber artists out there (Bonnie and Joyce!). I am a past member and found it to be a very supportive and professional group. They have a "call for artists" listed on their site right now.

Meet New Member Laurie Weiss
I'm Laurie Weiss. I am a book artist. I started doing calligraphy while I
was working at Intel, to relax after ridiculous days. Then I took a book
binding class from Sandy Tilcock at Calligraphy NW back in the early '90s
and have been hooked on books ever since. I like the tactile sense of
working with the paper, cloth, leather. I still do some brush calligraphy,
but I haven't been practicing so most fonts are too rusty these days.
Most recently I've been collaborating with Paulann Petersen, Oregon Poet
Laureate, and Barbara Mason, a local print maker, on a book called Dark
River of Stars. It's a collection of Valentine's Day poems Paulann sent to
friends over the years. We just had the launch party last weekend at 23
Sandy Gallery, where the book is on exhibit through March 10th.
I live in the hills south of Forest Grove and Cornelius, on six acres with two dogs, a small vineyard, and my studio. You can see my work at mywebsite www.blackdogbookarts.com.
I'm currently a PAC member but am looking forward to additional inspiration
from joining this group.

Mary O'Shea and the CAP
Congratulations to Mary O'shea. She was accepted as one of the artists to be shown at the big annual event CAP, the Cascade Aids Project, the largest contemporary art auction of its kind in the Northwest. She submitted one of her Blue Heron on a Stand pieces. To quote Mary, "it is a real honor to be part of this organization that helps raise money to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS, and provide services to those affected by HIV in the Northwest". The event takes place Saturday, April 28 at the historic Memorial Coliseum and Mary will be there.
